The king (George III of Great Britain) asked his American painter, Benjamin West, what Washington would do after winning independence. West replied, “They say he will return to his farm.”
“If he does that,” the incredulous monarch said, “he will be the greatest man in the world.”
And he did just that, until the people called on him again to lead them through their first eight years under the new Constitution, which was authored partially on advice that he had offered.
George Washington died less than two years after his 21 years of service to his new nation ended, no doubt worn down by the work he had done.
